Brainstorming for the Zines

Hey everyone,

This post is meant to be an open forum of comments and replies to help brainstorm as many ideas for the zines we will be making, starting next week.  We will be working in groups of about four students to create content and develop a layout for a zine that we will publish, swap and distribute.

Here is what I expect you to do for this week's blog comments.

1. Read any comments that have already been made.  If you have something that will add to or enrich the comment, make a reply.  Avoid the obvious replies like, "I totally agree, bruh, that would be cool."

2.  After you have read any comments, create a comment of your own.  This should include at least one idea of something that you think would:
1)help others to understand children's rights issues,

2) identify resources for people to access if they want to help advance the rights of children,

3) make the problems that children face in the world clear to others,

4) highlight a right or set of rights from the UNCRC that you feel need to be addressed worldwide or in the U.S.

5) present some accurate facts or figures about conditions in the world that threaten the rights of children

6) other ideas of things you feel should be communicated so others can understand why children's rights are important.

3. Check back a few times between now and next Wednesday and read comments that followed your own and make replies if you have some ideas.

    3. I am glad that you both agree with Nic's idea but responses should be more than a simple I agree. responses need to advance or add to the original post, for example,
Nic I like this idea here; did you have a specific way to represent this in a zine in mind? I think it would be cool to play on the fact that all but 2 countries in the UN have ratified it and the USA is the only one with a functioning government at the time to not ratify it.
I still agreed with Nic but I also added to his idea and asked questions. This blog post should be a conversation not a high five.

    6. I think a zine like that is a great idea. I can imagine that there are a lot of people who aren't aware of the UNCRC

      Delete
    7. Who would we give the zine to?

      Delete
    8. Kind of like what Lauren said, not many people aren't aware of the UNCRC, maybe we could pass it onto the government to review it and see what they say about the topic?

    9. The U.S. hasn't ratified this document because of one main reason. By ratifying this document we would be giving other countries the ability to change our laws and rules maybe even to go against our constitution. I personally think that we should not ratify this document because even though your against ratifying it that doesn't make you against children's rights.

    10. We would give our zines to other schools doing the same project and we will put them out on a stand the comic con that is coming up.

    11. I think we should tell them information to the kids.

  3. i think that we should add everyone's ideas. but my idea is that we should have all the rights in the zine so that people can know the rights that they are learning about and i think that we should have a table of continence like so that people can find a specific thing in the zine so they don't have to read the whole thing

    1. That would be really cool. We probably wouldn't be able to incorporate everybody rights, but we could do examples of major rights that need to be satisfied.

      Delete
    2. I think that having the rights in the zinew would be a great idea. I also agree with Issac, that we should put major rights that we know are not satisfied but clearly need to be. For the table of contents thing, I think that is a really good idea. That way if people have recently heard about a right that is not being satisfied, they can read more about it and become more educated about that right.

      Delete
    3. I like your Idea but I have some questions.

Are the certain rights that should be in the Zine?

Are some rights more useful that others?

      Delete
    4. This seems like an awesome idea! How are we going to present those rights though? Like are you going to make a collage, a list, or anything really? Just how are we going to fit those ideas into one simple idea.

      Delete

    6. I love the idea of a Table of contents. It would make it a lot more organized but from the zines I looked at none of them had that so would that be considered original or a bad idea?

    7. I feel like I would put in the zines that are most important to our well being.Like ones that keep us safe and free.Like staying alive and being able to express ourselves. The laws that are about being safe and expressing ourselves helps us develop. They are most important to our mental and physical well being

  4. I think that a way people might understand the rights of children is with the use of creativity in general. You need something that gets to the point but is still fun at the same time. You can do this by making the words the vocal point of the page with some pictures or a background to add some flare. Also if you are explaining a children's right, try to capture the most important parts.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Creativity always catches people's eyes. The more people hear about it, the more we can spread the word.

      Delete
    2. So, maybe like writing and article at the top of a page and doing like a creative drawing of the right being used correctly and a drawing of it not being used correctly.

      Delete
  5. I think it would be cool if we made a petition to ratify the children rights. In our Zines, we could show examples of kids in the United States that need the rights to have a safe environment. We could lead a link to an online petition to ratify it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Do you think the petition might make a difference in the U.S.'s decision?

      Delete
    2. A lot of people are not safe because they are hungry our sick but we are sometimes helping them but if we used all the money we used all the money we used for NASA and skyscrapers and other things like that we could feed a hole lot of people, so why don't we?

      Delete
    3. What would be the point of ratifying it, if many of the rights are already ingrained in our laws and overall culture? For example, there are laws everywhere about kidnapping, and it's common knowledge that we have access to privacy.

      Delete
    4. I love the idea. But what would the petition have to draw the peoples eye. Such as a picture of some sort or an interesting slogan. Then I think we might be able to get even more to sign it. Please get back to me. Goodbye.

      Delete
    5. I think that it sounds like a good idea, but do you think that we would have enough people seeing it and signing it to even get anyone's attention besides ours?

      Delete
    6. This sounds interesting, but the U.S already has a bunch of rights for children. I think the problem isn't that we don't have rights, its that we aren't taught about them.

      Delete
    7. I think that is a good idea but some people might ask why do kids in countries that signed for childrens rights still have a problem with it. Also in America children are pretty protected and have rights, but its just not official.

      Delete
  6. I think a topic about gender discrimination in children would make a good zine. Kids are basically taught that boys are disgusting or that girls are "icky" and they have "cooties". they grow up believe that one gender is above/lower than them, which leads to bullying, cruelty, and different rights among them. (I think I said that right. If you can't tell, I'm a feminist that believes in gender equality.)

    ReplyDelete

    1. This is a really cool idea. It's true that they teach us that. Do you think that if we were to make a zine about gender discrimination, it would change people's minds about gender discrimination?

      Delete
    2. Why does the USA think they are so cool?
-We aren't willing to give others control
      -We grew up like that
      We should start a list:

      Delete
    3. We could decide to make a Zine about gender discrimination, but the thing is, who is going to be spreading the word?
Should the kids be taught by teachers?
Should the kids be taught by parents?
      etc.

      Delete
    4. This is a good topic idea, it is definitely an important thing that is going on. For example there hasn't been a female president of the united states in all of history. Of course there are many other things like this going on and I think it would be good to adress.

      Delete
    5. I don't think we should just stop at gender discrimination, I think we should also include LGBTA (excuse what I may have missed, I didn't mean to exclude) education.

      Delete
    6. I don't thing gender inequalities is on purpose but rather just there. Genders are different and we all have to admit that, but it's drilled into us that being being emotional is weak and being strong is good. And if a girl tries to be strong, or a guy is emotional, their looked down upon. But if we all just accepted these differences instead of comparing them, gender discrimination would all but disappear.

  8. We should make our zines about how the U.S. needs to ratify our rights because while we take everything for granted, people in Belize and Africa don't get what we take for granted. The U.S needs to ratify our rights.

    1. A lot of people have made a comment similar to this but I do feel they should ratify these rights. Perhaps they haven't because we have The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment act and many other laws. I still feel they should ratify the UNCRC articles or at least take some of the articles into consideration. While in the U.S most rights are covered with our laws some aren't.

      Delete
  9. I think it would be cool to do a zine about the effects the rights have. In the video we watched at the start of the unit, once kids learned about their rights, their lives were so much different. We hear a lot about why we should, but we don't really focus on what will happen once they are actually implemented.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah we could research and look up different stories

      Delete
    2. I think that is a wonderful idea. Tell people about how these rights affect them, see if they will be able to make a difference in their lives. I think it would be cool to pair this idea with some statistics of how many children don't even know that this document exists.

      Delete
  10. I think that we could do a zine of children's poems/writings from a 3rd world country. This would help to show that children's rights will help create and expand on children who are interested in writing,a form of education. It would also give exposure to show that even in poverty children are creative and smart. We could look up different poems and then put them in order of type or country. Our front cover could be a picture or illustration by child in poverty.

    1. I completely agree with your idea. If we made the zine like we were living in that country and someone read it, they would see how hard life for children is in that country. Great Idea.

      Delete
    2. I think that that is a really good idea. Instead of explaining how children's rights are violated ourselves, the children whose rights are actually violated on a day-to-day basis get to explain how it feels. We, as children of a first-world country, are privileged and have everything, so it really isn't fair to explain how hungry those children get when we've never really experience hunger ourselves.

      Delete
    3. I think that's a really good idea. I think that if someone sees how others express their ideas, it helps them understand what the other person is experiencing.

      Delete
    4. I like your idea because it would be important to show/incorporate children's rights in a way some people might not see it.

      Delete
  11. Personally, I believe that one of the many possibilities for a Zine is to put down the rights already given in a more descriptive version. It would give the readers a better understanding, and also be creative. If it catches the reader's eye, they'll have a better chance of being interested and actually WANT to read and learn about the rights.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with this because if someone usually sees something cool like a game, piece of art, person, they'll usually want to get a closer look or want to learn more.

      Delete
    2. I like this idea. This will help the said person reading the zine, to not only read that, but to read and learn about their rights and people who fought for them on their own.

      Delete
  12. I think that for zine idea, we should make our zine explain the 4 categories of the children's rights, (Protection, Development, Participation, and Survival) and give examples on how these categories with individual rights are violated for each child. For each category that explains a right, we could do drawings of what that child has v.s. what they should have. This would be using our creativity, while also giving attention to a very big problem around the world. We could also create different ways throughout the zine to bring attention to these problems, so that there is something different for everyone to see/read. If we did our zine this way, we could reach out to different people by what they like to see in zines, while also addressing a big problem.

    1. That's a great idea! I think that if people are more educated on the subject, they might try to figure out a way to help. See, you can't help someone, if you don't know the ways to help. That's why, while I agree with your idea, I think that we might also want to add in some ways to help or organizations that work to help these people. Thanks for your time and consideration!

      Delete
    2. Yeah, we could definitely do something like that. It would have to be very fun to look at and not super gloomy.

      Delete
  13. I think if you want to go a funnier route with the zine. You could make a comic about a group of super powered do gooders that uses their unique powers to help children in need. But hey that's just my idea there are probably better ones out there. I just thought that I might be an interesting route to take. Thanks for your time. Goodbye.

    1. I think that this is a great idea, it would be very interesting to have a group of super heroes that go around solving problems. I was wondering if you had any more ideas. Could you take this one step further? Do they have like a catch phrase? Do they help children in small villages or just big cities? It'd be nice if you could expand on your statement, thanks for your time!

    2. I think that is an awesome idea. To have some eye catching, or interesting little story or comic strip and pair it with another page of statistics and such. It would be a good way to get people really interested in reading the zine and they would then truly retain the information we give them afterwards. Great idea.

      Delete
    3. I agree, this would especially be helpful for younger children as it would keep their interest and help the information stick a bit better as well. Good thinkin' bud.

      Delete
  14. I think that Our zines should very informative. We should discuss article 19. Article 19 is the child's right to be protected against any forms of violence, abuse, or negligence, either mentally or physically. Negligence can be defined as improper care in the form of food, water, or appropriate medical services. The zine may include a child who has been abused or neglected. They might go to a class to learn about their rights and then fight for them. They could win or lose, either way it would make an impact. For example, if the child wins, then the cartoon ends happily and may inspire readers to help the cause. In the event of a loss, it may inform readers that these sorts of children need help from the public.

    1. I agree that they should be informative, but I also think that people wouldn't really be interested in the zines if it was just page after page of statistics and facts. I think we should pair the info with something a bit more 'attention-grabbing' good thinking though.

      Delete
    2. I agree with Sammi on the information side of things. We should definitely have information in there, but, having to do with what Katie said, we shouldn't just bomb them with fact after fact. We need to make it interesting while at the same time, sneaking facts in wherever we need to.

      Delete
  15. I think one idea of a Zine is to talk about children in poor countries trying to develop their economy. (per say) Then you could talk about how the children's rights in those countries affect the way they live. Its just my idea, so I'll take any form of criticism.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that that is a great idea! It would be interesting and would portray the message we are trying to send, how these rights affect the way children live. Although it is such a fabulous idea. It may help to add a bit more, to, say, add in a comic strip, a personal experience, or a specific right. I think that you are on a great path and I would not have considered that. Thanks for bringing this view out into the world.

      Delete
  16. Another thing that our zine should include, is a very fun design. I think that it would be fun to add bright, cheery colours and cool designs. The edges should have some sort of pattern. The story should have some sort of drawing, a cartoon or such. If it's colourful and fun, people are more likely to pick it up versus a zine without color. A catchy title might also help improve the look of the overall design.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Bright colors are sure to catch someones eye, goo thinking. Also, the whole title thing is true, if they see a zine with the title "Learning about children's rights" it won't catch their attention like a title such as "The amazing effects of Children's rights!" I think creating an interesting title is a great plan to call attention to our zines.

      Delete
    2. I like all of these ideas, we could even make something like 3d letters so that it is more likely to catch someones eye.

      Delete
    3. I think that a fun design could be interesting, but maybe not used throughout the whole zine. Like, if we had a picture of a child starving or drinking out of a polluted river, it would be more appropriate to actually show what happens to these children than to just color it and try to make it look interesting. But, we could still use the fun and colorful designs to show how the children's lives are improved by organizations that help them.

      Delete
    4. I agree with you that our Zines should be creative and colorful. If we don't it would really look bad.

      Delete
    5. Although it's important to have a unique design for our zines, I think we need to make sure our message about children's rights comes across to everyone. But we could have the writing written in a way that is memorable.

      Delete
  17. For our zine, what we could do, is that we could include all 4 categories; protection, development, survival, and participation. We could include how each of these help children and how it applies to all children. Not the ones who have more money, not the ones who look nice, and not the ones who have good health and educations. Those are things we can't all get without these rights.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that sounds like a great idea because it can show people who maybe haven't heard about it the places where it really hurts when the rights aren't being treated properly.

      Delete
    2. I also agree that's a good idea. We should put in how kids get affected by these rights and how the countries get affected by these rights. We could also include people who don't get these rights and how we could fix that.

      Delete
    3. I agree that we should have separate sections for protection, development, survival, and participation. This way everybody knows why each of those are important in children's rights.

      Delete
    4. This sounds like a great idea because we can get more information on each of the four categories and so might others too

      Delete
  18. I think that the zine should be more than one thing. I should be informational but not to much that it doesn't have anything fun to do with it. Otherwise its just boring. We should include what some of the children's rights are, and we should have some examples of what they pertain to. Maybe countries in need. We should look at the countries and think what categories do these belong in. Also what rights can go with these. It will show others about some of the serious needs in other places besides the US.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i agree with that idea specially the NOT boring part

      Delete
    2. I agree that it should talk about more than one thing. But, if we put too many things in the zine, it may not be as informational.

      Delete
  19. I think a suggestion for our zine is that we could include a couple of everyone's ideas for the comics but then still add all or most of the articles so the reader can kinda get an idea of where the zine is going. Although it would be nice to include all the articles I think the main ones we could use are articles 20 because I feel like little children shouldn't be living in an unsafe environment even if they do live with their parents. Another article that would be great to add into the zine could be the last article stating everyone should know about these rules. I feel like people need to know about these rules so its easier to follow them and so that ever kid is living up to their needs.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I also feel that everyone should know about these rules because there are a lot of people who don't and so they end up not following the rules. That is a good idea to include everyone's ideas in the Zine but maybe we could also include a few more rules.

      Delete
  20. My suggestion for a Zine is to make one that shows how you can help children's rights and how they have affected other people. Some people might not know about the rights of a child and everyone should know about them. Maybe the Zine could protest about how children don't get their rights. It could also be creative like have a lot of pictures but also use different fonts for the words or cut out words from magazines. So it could be like a collage.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I really like your idea but, how would we protest and who or what would we protest?

      Delete
  21. I think it would be cool and creative to do a poem written in the child's sense of view. A child whose needs are not being met, to express the emotions of a child who is, let's say, being bullied or something of the sort.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree but how can we maybe incorporate art into this to make it more than just a poem?

      Delete
    2. Great question Dylan! I think it would be really cool if we did some sort of art either behind it or actually using the lettering itself! We could cut out letters from magazines and paste them or we could use the art of calligraphy, however you wanted to add art you could. Simply use the poem and the art together to express an emotion.

      Delete
    3. I think it would be a good idea to use the art to enhance and strengthen the ideas displayed in the poem itself, not create it's own idea though. Almost as a support to help the reader create a picture from the poem.

      Delete
  22. After reading all of these I think that we should make a combination of all of these ideas. This would take much of effort to agree on all of these ideas and read all of the comments and that sort of thing. If we don't agree on something I suggest that we add as much as possible to this whether it be pictures or multiple different fonts in it or even just adding multiple colors. This would brighten it up and make it more fun for the reader. We could also include different comic books or even magazines to include more variations of sources included in this zine project. I think it will be a fun project but that is just me.

    1. I agree with you Dylan that would be a really cool Zine. Also all the ideas that you give would really make the Zines really cool and creative.

  23. I think we need to help others understand the UNCRC because if we don't get what is wrong with what is happening to those kids on the other side of the world, we might turn out like them one day. Those kids are sad, dying for goodness sake. We don't ant to end up like that. Neither does Mr. Boley and Mr. Prouty. we need to know about our right and the UNCRC so our country does not fall apart like the other countries that those kids lived in.

  26. I think we should use multiple pages with all sorts of different ideas on them. We could work together and one person in the group could do the art, one could do a page of statistics, one could do a comic strip, and one could do a poem or short story. I think mixing our ideas together would be the best plan for our zines.

  27. For the zine we should incorporate a comic strip with no words that portrays child trafficking and other forms of abuse e.g. neglect. We could also incorporate a page with like a few inspirational quotes like

    2. 1. I think by doing this it would bring some kind of melancholy, and make people feel what is happening.
      2. I was thinking we should put a row of squares and put different forms of abuse in each square. Like one would be child trafficking, one would be starvation, one would be verbal abuse and instead of words you could draw like a pointy speech bubble or the parent that looks like its yelling and draw lightning bolts around them.

  28. I feel we should talk about Article 24. Witch is You have the right to the best health care possible, safe water to drink, nutritious food, a clean and safe environment, and information to help you stay well. I feel this is a good topic because this doesn't always happen. I appeal to this topic so much because if some one didn't get the proper medical care they could die. To me this is definitely a topic that should be addressed more.

  29. To help others to understand children's rights issues, we could make a zine about the daily life of a child that lives in a different country and show how their life would be better with children's rights. Also we should include how many children in developing countries live in bad conditions (garbage dumps, by toxic water) and that can really affect their development and survival.

  30. I think our zine should include a headline with a success story of someone who finally were given the rights they're supposed to with a small story of how they became educated on the subject. We could a collage of people who've got their rights, too. Pictures may lure people into the zine more so they'll read it. Inside of the zine there could be the kids rights with an example with someone it's helped.

  34. I think it would be important for our zine to derive from development rights. That includes the right to education and freedom of thought. Everybody should have the opportunity to a proper education especially with the world advancing so rapidly. The zine could have art like children reading compared to others obtaining very little, like the abc's, to enhance the understanding. The art could also be black and white to represent the world without knowledge, and then evolve into bright colors to resemble acquiring knowledge and education.

To inform the reader about the other three rights, the main character of the zine could be explaining (in black and white graphics) that they have survival, protection, and participation rights but they crave to learn more, just because I'm really interested in development rights and I think it's important.

Or/and we could have on each page one of the major children's rights and what minor rights follow them. For example: Survival- the child’s right to life and the needs like nutrition, shelter, and to the hospital, Development- the right to education, play, free time, and freedom of thought, ethical sense and religion, Participation- surround children's freedom to express opinions, to have a say in matters affecting their own lives, to join encompass children's freedom to express opinions, to have a say in matters affecting their own lives, and to join organizations, Protection- children are protected against all forms of abuse and neglect, protection and restoration for children who have suffered neglect or abuse of any kind. 59. There’s this story from Greek mythology about a king named Tantalus. He tried to trick the Greek Gods, so they punished him by placing him in a pool of water and under a fruit tree with low hanging branches. Whenever Tantalus tried to bend over for a drink, the water would recede, and when he tried to pick the fruit, the branches would always raise themselves away from him. This reminds me of how the children in third-world countries are so close to getting food and water, but their government, or any other country, doesn’t help them. That violates article 24, 26 and 27 of the UNCRC. Article 24 states “You have the right to the best healthcare possible, safe water to drink, nutritious food, a clean and safe environment, and information to help you stay well.”, article 26 states “You have the right to help from the government if you are poor or in need.” and article 27 says “You have the right to food, clothing, a safe place to live and to have your basic needs met. You should not be disadvantaged so that you can't do many of the things other kids can do.” I was thinking that we could have a comic that showed, instead of King Tantalus being punished, a young child in that situation of being unable to get food and water. It can show people who don’t understand how the children’s rights are violated by letting them see, in an analogy sort of way, how children are treated in first-world countries.
Did you know that hunger kills more people every year than tuberculosis, malaria and AIDS combined? In 2010, more than 20,000 children died each day from hunger, racking up to around 7.6 million deaths that year. $3.2 billion US dollars is what it costs per year to feed the 66 million hungry school-aged children. Some organizations that help with child hunger are http://kidsagainsthunger.org/ , http://www.feedthechildren.org/ , http://www.worldvision.org/ (religion based organization) and http://www.actionagainsthunger.org/ . Thank you!

A suggestion for our zines would be on each page put a picture from a certain part of the world and then put a picture of a child from that same country and have it show what their life is like. Then we could get a few different countries, then paste them on the zine, then list the rights that are being violated, then color in the blank spots. Of course we would also have to think of a name for our zine - Abbie Tallman

  61. An idea for a zine would be to have the point of view of a child who doesn't have rights and one who does. For example, article 28, while one page can be of a child who has a great education, and goes to a good school, the other page could be of a child who doesn't get to go to school. That way we would be pointing out some ways that the rights are violated. - Alexus Imbouathong

  62. I think our zines should be about children that have these rights, and others that don't have these rights. For example we could write about a child that has a good education, is properly fed everyday, and is protected by the government/laws. On the other side there is a child that doesn't have a good education, and is starving everyday. This way we see the different way of each sides lives and also see how the rights are being violated.

  76. For my idea as a zine I think we should include our opinions and facts. I also think that maybe we should add our opinions from each of the three blogs we have written and commented on. Like the first blog post we commented on at the very beginning of this project, when we were explaining why learning about children's rights would help us and why we are learning about it. If we included our ideas about why we are learning about children's rights and why it would help us, then when people read our zines they'll understand like we do why learning about children's rights are important.

People like to see art and pictures. To some, seeing all words of explaining children's rights would be hard to understand and harder to really get the message of why children's rights are important. So if we included pictures and images supporting our ideas then I think it would be easily appealing to people who don't like reading paragraphs and paragraphs of just plain writing.
