Please click on this link to see and read about less fortunate children and answer one of these questions:
- What children's rights are not being met in this article and these photos?
- Do you think there are children in your own country or state that may be experiencing something similar?
- What ways can you help other children receive or defend their rights to have access to more resources to ensure a healthy, safe and happy life?
- How do the children show resilience in some of these photos? In other words, how are they trying to overcome a bad situation?
Not all people around the world are educated in human rights and in children rights. We acknowledge that these things are wrong, so we are working towards ending it, and even though it's bad and their rights aren't being respected in the photos, we are trying to make things better, but it's a process. These kids are doing great at using their surroundings to their advantage and being creative with it.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think we are doing to protect there rights?
DeleteWell our first step was acknowledging that we have rights, and even though American didn't sign the treaty, our military is in other countries trying to protect the rights of humans and children.
DeleteIt is great how they are making due, but we need to help! Terrible things are happening
DeleteOne thing that everyone agreed to is that everyone should get clean water and food but over 1000 people are dying because of lack of clean water.
ReplyDeleteIt's so sad that we take things for granted but then people on the other side of the world don't even have a little doll to play with. It makes me feel really bad. I just want to spend all of my money and buy toys for all of the needy kids. Sadly, there are too many.
DeleteTwo years ago, I went to Belize. It was really sad, because all I saw wherever I looked were kids playing with dented cans, pieces of cloth, and bugs. There were dogs running around with diseases, and scorpions all over the place. I was fortunate enough to see a little girl's reaction when I gave her, her very first toy. The smile that started to grow on her face touched my heart because I knew that the only "toy" she'd ever known was a can. I got the opportunity to see a bunch of kid's reactions when I was giving them toys. They were so grateful and it made me realize how much we have and how little they have.
ReplyDeleteThat is very touching and makes me feel bad because I am traveling to Belize and never thought that other people there wouldn't have the opportunity even to just play with the soccer ball.
DeleteThis was a very touching story. I agree with you completely on how we have so much and they have so little. I agree with you 100%, and I think we take things for granted.
DeleteYou are a very kind person to have given them a toy.
DeleteIt is so terrible that people are in poverty, and we are not helping. On the other hand, 50 million people are in poverty in the U.S., so that is hard.
DeleteI think that the government should help out with that to at least give them a home and food.
DeleteThe survival rights are not being met. Kids are not given proper water and food. This is a terrible thing that is happening that needs to be stopped.
ReplyDeleteTo also think of the animals that rely on the water for drinking and living is very tragic too. We are lucky to have water fountains or sinks that we can wash our dishes in. It would be a lot of work and time to clear all of the waste though.
DeleteI agree that kids there should be given clean water and food.
DeleteI agree, the kids should have at least clean food, water, and some type of toy or something to play with besides garbage.
DeleteI a lot of these photos, the children are swimming or playing with the garbage. They have fun with the things that are killing them.
ReplyDeletethat is not fair for children
Deletethat is not fair for children
DeleteI agree because they do not have the money to bye clean toys and clothes. Also kids do not know that it could kill them so that is one of the reasons we need to teach kids about human rights.
DeleteI agree with you because they're happy without knowing about the things that are hurting them.

ReplyDeleteThe life of a child in America compared to a child's life in a third world country is terrible. I'm always wondering how fortunate we ended up and how they ended up living and playing in an environment that is similar to hell on earth.
ReplyDeleteGood point the rights are definitely important to everyone.
DeleteRights are life. Everyone has them, but people still take them.
DeleteI believe that you are right. Kids are being so spoiled in the U.S. and kids in their countries are being deprived of their rights.
DeleteI agree. We are all so fortunate to be living where we are.
DeleteI think that honestly we should try to improve our country before we try to improve others lives because if we aren't able to support ourselves how can we help others. We aren't ratifying the UNCRC because of ligament reasons. The UN is against some of the basic rights that we have in our constitution. If we Ratify this they will be able to change our rights.
ReplyDeleteWhats a ligament reason?
DeleteI think it is supposed to be legitimate
DeleteYep legitimate
DeleteThese children are a perfect example of going on living in the face of adversity, living and even playing in the worst places. They manage a smile in the kinds of environments that us Americans cannot dream of, and most likely would break down while being in it. They survive the most horrible things, and do it while keeping an eye on the silver lining.
ReplyDeleteI agree but they haven't experienced the rights that we have.
DeleteI agree with Izzy so much it not even funny
DeleteI agree it's hard to see them suffer because they don't have our rights. What can we do though?
DeleteI agree With this because it is the only thing they have seen as enjoyable.
DeleteThe right to a shelter is not being met, and I think in the really poor parts of the U.S. there might be children living like this, and maybe orphans. Foster systems and orphanages are usually not happy places to grow up, so they are going to live on the streets rather than getting help. They're smiling even though they don't have anywhere to live, which perfectly captures the materialistic mindsets first world countries have.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this because at this point the children aren't really alive. Soon enough they'll die just because of the simple factors that for some reason can't be solved.
DeleteThat almost brought tears to my eyes. I think that some of the kids who are orphans and grow up in foster homes haven't really seen anything better than what they have, so i think it's possible that they think that it can't really get better for them.
DeleteThese children are having massive humans right violations. They are uneducated in the right procedure for health. It will take a massive amount of effort on the countries part which most countries that have this problem don't have the resources to change it.
ReplyDeleteThis is very true many people think its only other countries problem to help but it is not, the own country needs to take part in it. Those rights are very important in a child's life and there are many more but those are very important.
DeleteThey are overcoming it because they still have fun and swim in it or go boating in it and jumping from trash piles to trash piles.
ReplyDeleteI think it is sad, and yes they are overcoming it and making the best out of what they have.
DeleteThey Have fun with because it is there vision of fun. They have not had the ability to see any other vision of fun.
DeleteThey are making the best out of the situation and it's sad because they don't have as much as we do but we take it all for granted.
ReplyDeleteI think it's amazing how these kids can still make themselves happy even though they don't have much. I also think that it is really sad because they've accepted the tragic truth and are happy with it when they truly deserve so much more.
DeleteThe children make swings and hats out of recycled materials. They do anything they can to have fun in spite of their bad situation. Some of the children use the land fills as playgrounds.
ReplyDeleteI feel like these kids are very resourceful in the fact that they are able to be happy in the current situation, I also think that it's really depressing that they have to. These kids have accepted the bare minimum and are okay with it when honestly, they should have so much better than they are being presented with.
DeleteI think it's sad but inspiring that they can do all of that and we need everything perfect or we won't use it but they use everything to their advantage.
DeleteI feel as if this problem is a global problem. This may be more rare in some parts of the world but it can still happen anywhere. These children playing in masses of bacteria and viruses and that's not good for their hygiene let alone their heath. In this process of them playing and making the best out of the landfills, they don't seem to really realize the effects.

ReplyDeleteI believe that what is happening around the world to the Children is horrible. Their rights are not being anywhere close to met, and it is not fair at all/They are uneducated, and they have no food and shelter. Children should not have to go through this at such young ages, even throughout their life. When children have to find things to distract them, it can end up being terribly wrong.
ReplyDeleteI agree, the fact that their lives are at risk every minute of every day, and that they are very likely to get sick and die, it just hurts to think about how we have so much and we don't appreciate it.
DeleteI agree with you. These children should be able to grow up without worrying where their next meal is coming from and if their going to get sick from drinking water. Honestly, that is a problem we need to solve in the US, as well as around the world.
DeleteThe photos are depressing but the expressions on the kids faces are amazingly happy.
DeleteI followed the link and saw a number of pictures. After reading the first few paragraphs and looking at the second picture down, I found that some children don't have access to clean water, adequate shelter, and even a sanitary way to wash their hands. They don't realize how unfortunate they are, they just keep playing in the landfills and eating food that is dangerous with such a large number of viruses living in it.
ReplyDeleteYes that is just too much on how much they are damaging themselves
DeleteI think that all of this is not only in a few countries, but in almost all of them. In some of the pictures you could see children playing in lands of trash, and swimming in polluted water. No child should have to live like that, every child has a right to their health, and should have a constant house that is not surrounded by trash.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree, I have recently been looking into the matter of food-borne illnesses and lots of cases came from raw meats, improper hand washing, and feces. These children are not washing there hands properly, and playing in and eating these sorts of things, lots of their lives are in danger. While most of these cases last only a few days, without proper treatment and antibiotics, these things could be fatal.I totally agree, I have recently been looking into the matter of food-borne illnesses and lots of cases came from raw meats, improper hand washing, and feces. DeleteMaybe we shouldn't be worried about them as much because there are environments in our own country that we should be fixing first.
DeleteI couldn't agree more! We should fix all of this mess, and not have to watch Children die. Having them play in trash, is unsafe, and completely unhealthy. We need to fix this sometime. Hopefully soon.
DeleteAllison, I see your point, but although we have environmental issues too does not mean we can not help others. We, as a world, must help each other out. We all are living in the same world and we should help keep it healthy. Maybe we shouldn't be worried about them, but if we were in that situation where we could not afford anything, nor take care of ourselves, I would want help from others.
DeleteI agree with both Grace and Allison but I think that we need to help them out. I don't think that every child should get a lawyer if they want one because that could give them the power to take advantage of their parents. We have to be sure not to give these people too much power or else our country and some families will suffer from it.
DeleteI agree with you because every child deserves to live in a home that they feel safe in. Children have the right of living in a healthy environment.
DeleteI totally agree with what you said there are many countries that have this problem. Also no child should have to live like that going days or weeks without go food is horrible and no child should have to go through that.
DeleteIn a good amount of the pictures you see them playing in things that are basically killing them. No kid should be living like that and playing with trash as toys and swimming in a body of water that's polluted. There also not getting the right nutrition that they need to be a healthy child which isn't a good thing.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this it is unbelievable on how many children are doing this damage to themselves
DeleteIn the pictures shown, there are so many children's rights being violated. One of the Children's Rights is that they have the right to the best education possible. These children are obviously not getting an education, or at least a very poor education. With no/ barely any education, this cycle will go on for their children and so on. Education lets them get jobs to pay for food, homes, and family, but with no education, they won't get any of that. Also, children are supposed to have the right to be and feel safe. The children in these pictures are living in dumps, with homes made of trash. They swim in dirty rivers with garbage floating around them. These children aren't safe, and I'm sure most of them don't feel safe.
ReplyDeletethey are living in garbage!!!!!!!!!!!!that is sooooooooooo wrong. have little to no education.playing in garbage and swimming in that stuff i agree with you on this.
DeleteI agree, these children should not have to live without the necessities to survive. They may live in a different country and be from a different culture, but besides that what makes them so different from us that the don't get what they need.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI believe that children in my state/country are experiencing the same things as these children in the article. I do not think they have to swim through polluted waters or jump over toxic water from one garbage pile to another, but I know everyone struggles with something. Maybe children in Iowa struggle to get their next meal, or to bathe, or even to sleep at night because they don't have a roof over their heads.

ReplyDeleteQuestion 4-
ReplyDeleteThese children are overcoming their problems by staying happy and positive. One motive is that positivity is contagious and can be spread through entire nations. These children make the best of their lives and the best of their living states. They could be totally depressed but they find ways to be happy no matter what happens. This is how many can live but choose not to but these children did. I wish I was more like them and was happy no matter what happened, Good for them and im happy that they can be happy.
I agree that they have a great attitude for having to play on garbage piles. They are still having a good life.
DeleteQuestion 2- Yes I think that there are some children in my country experiencing similar things but not as much as other countries. In our country kids don't usually play in dumps but some people have poverty.
ReplyDeleteCan you elaborate on what we can do, and how children in the United States live compared to the children in this article live?
DeleteAs an American child who has had the opportunity to study the world. The needs not being met include: Shelter, Food, clean water, and safe living conditions. Children all over the US are being denied these rights. Not just the US either, everywhere even though the region/place has children's rights, children are not receiving their rights! Children starve to death, dehydrate until death, and swim in potentially toxic, polluted waters because they have no other ways to enjoy themselves. These things make them happy and that is the worst part, they are happy with this situation, being able to swim is a great opportunity even if it is in polluted waters. They've learned to accept this when they deserve so much more.
ReplyDeletethey are living in garbage!!!!!!!!!!!!that is sooooooooooo wrong. have little to no education.playing in garbage and swimming in that stuff. i agree with you on this.
DeleteI completely agree with you Katie. These children have learned to live with what they are given, even though they deserve more. I also want to bring up a point a previous comment made. Although living in garbage is wrong, us as a nation needs to improve our children's rights. There are children who are getting abused and think nothing of it because they think thats what parents are supposed to do. What can we do for another community, if we still need to help ourselves?
DeleteTrue, we need to help ourselves, but can't we complete both at the same time? I'm not demeaning or downgrading our problems, only saying that in a lot of ways, they have it worse off, like pollution.
DeleteI agree, it seems as if we believe that who said what in politics is more important than millions dying because of unfit living conditions.
DeleteI agree, all these kids do deserve more than what they are given to be entertained with.
DeleteHow do you know things will change? Even if we do ratify the UNCRC, we cannot guarantee change, because there will always be parents, teachers, role models who disagree, and will teach their kids that standing up for themselves to their parents is unacceptable. Children will be raised thinking that when they have kids, they are supposed to shout abuse at them, and force them to do unnecessary things everyday that make them unhappy. How can we change this from happening? Human rights, whether it be for children or for adults, there are always going to be debates about if they should give certain people certain rights. (ex. Gay Marriage)
ReplyDeleteQuestion 4-
ReplyDeleteI think that these children are overcoming their problems by not worrying about the future or the past. I think these children are thinking about just the present. They are also happy and making what they must do to survive fun. They learn to turn their work into play while still getting their work done. This is how I think these children are overcoming their problems.
I agree with this. These children are living for now and may not be thinking of the future.
DeleteI agree with you because the children don't understand what is happening so they don't know that their fun may be what is keeping them alive.
DeletePositivity is a great thing in life. The world needs more of it because there is depression and such. But these kids are happy even though they live in a pile of trash. I believe that positivity are contagious so the world can have a better place. I am positive in this comment for people to like this.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeletethey all look like they are trying to have fun and i think that they are trying to make their situation more enjoyable and the picture with the kids that are collecting coconuts they are using their situation to feed themselves and those people who live in the junk yard are using the junk to live but it makes me so sad that they live that way every child has the right to live some where safe and that really doesn't look safe to me.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you because those kids are doing whatever they can to keep themselves happy and joyful.
DeleteTo ensure kids a happy, safe, and healthy life, they should know the rights that they have. If there is a child that doesn't feel safe or secure in the environment they live in, something should be done to help that child. Ways that this can be done are examples such as the UNCRC, where they teach children the rights that they have as an individual. Children all over the world live in places that do not make them happy or safe.
ReplyDeleteOne way that you can help a child defend their rights, could be getting them a lawyer. If a child was abused or mistreated, they deserve justice for what happened to them. If getting them a case in court doesn't work, then allowing them to go to a social worker would be the right decision. If a child is in an environment where they feel in danger, any circumstances should be taken to protect them. Every child deserves to feel secure and safe, wherever they are, and should have the ability to defend their rights.
I agree completely. I feel Children need to be happy, healthy and safe. They are mistreated and they need love.
DeleteI don't completely agree, I think that in those instances it looks very good and is very good. In other instances kids could take advantage of their parents. The child could make something up and be forced to get a lawyer even if it wasn't true.
DeleteI do agree because even though Thatcher said that the children could make up a story they would have to have proof and if they did make up a story to leave from their parents care then they must have had a reason regardless.
DeleteNatalie, You are right that children need representation, both legal and in the form of social workers. In some places there is little infrastructure to provide those things. The hope of the UNCRC is that, through increased partnerships within and between countries, we can build systems of support for the most vulnerable people in the world, poor children.
DeleteThatcher,
It could be true that some children may abuse the protections they are granted, however, I also think that I would sleep better knowing that children have advocates and protectors. If there were some children taking advantage of these, I am sure that there would be some policies and procedures that a government would put in place to evaluate the needs of claimants.
To make sure children have a safe, healthy and happy life we must do many things. We must teach them about the rights of children. This will help them to tell adults so they will be treated fairly and cared for. This also could help them become more confident. The final thing that this could help them with is just being able to make them proud so they can help others and become a leader for other children to follow.
ReplyDeleteWe also could send them to families. They don't need to live like that. To be happy, safe and healthy, they need to be with someone who will care for them. Also with a family they will feel loved and that will make them happy and feel protected. They family could also make them more confident and help them with their problems.
I agree. You stated that that every child should equally be cared for. I think this is true because every child deserves to feel safe, secure, and protected.
DeleteI agree with this. I'm not sure how happy their parents would be since they don't always want those rights for their children from what I've seen.
DeleteQuestion 1-
ReplyDeleteAll of the articles in the UNCRC aren't being followed. Some of the worse children's rights that are not being followed are right to privacy. Since these kids are homeless on the streets, naked with no where to go and don't get even a little bit of help. Also, kids with homes still might have to share a room or even share a bathroom with there whole family. Also, they have to go to dumb yards just to get food that other people have eaten and it probably is polluted.
Some kids don't even have clothes. In the US you might see some homeless and guys/girls without clothes, but in other places, you see that every day.
I agree and you make a strong point.
DeleteI disagree. Not all rights are not being followed. In the pictures, the children looked like they were having fun and playing and every child has the right to play. However I totally agree with the rest of your statements. It's not fair that their best source of food and water is toxic and unsanitary.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I saw, these children are trying to act like all the waste and pollution isn't a problem. They've got a terrible situation at hand, that we wouldn't think of and acting as if it's a normal day. They don't know that those piles of waste could be replaced with a playground to climb on or that they could get an education.
ReplyDeleteThese children who aren't getting an education can't comprehend what they're missing out on. If they could get this education, they'd understand that their rights are not being met. In time they'd know why they shouldn't have to play in garbage and they'd understand the diseases that are caused by how they have to live.
I agree with you. Maybe if these children knew their rights, they could do something when their rights are be violated.
DeleteQuestion 1 ~ What children's rights are not being met in this article and these photos?
ReplyDeleteIn these photos, there are plenty of rights that are not being met. For one example, Article 24: "You have the right to the best health care possible, safe water to drink, nutritious food, a clean and safe environment, and information to help you stay well." These children are swimming in polluted waters and quite possibly drinking that water too. The water could be hazardous to their health along with all the garbage around the places they play. The fact that they also play in the fumes of a municipality fumigant sprayer is a bad sign of an unclean environment too.
Another that that is not being met is Article 27: "You have the right to food, clothing, a safe place to live and to have your basic needs met.You should not be disadvantaged so that you can't do many of the things other kids can do." The kids don't have a safe place to play at all. The garbage and polluted water (as said before) could be harmful to their health. Forced to use recycled materials to play and innovate with, they are at a disadvantage to all the others children in the world and that in itself is a breach in their rights.
I think kids here may have a similar situation but it will never be as bad as their situation. They are living in a wast land scavenging for food that is polluted. They are living in an unsanitary place. Some people do go through this but they have it worse.
ReplyDeletei agree, but you should state way more :P
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteI think these children are trying to overcome a bad situation because it looks like they are having fun. It's as if they are trying to keep happy faces on and forget they are living in a junk yard. In one of the pictures, it shows a child jumping over TOXIC water. Children shouldn't have to have fun while doing things dangerous to their health. Children's rights like having the right to food, clothing, a safe
ReplyDeleteplace to live and to have your basic needs met. Children definitely should have access to these rights.
I completely agree because since these kids were born in these harsh conditions, they think that it is a normal lifestyle and everyone lives like this and I know for sure that not everyone lives like they have to.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI think that some people in my country that live in a similar way as these children. Not that people live in a dump because I don't know that but some people in this country with little education. Also I have a question, why are people taking pictures but not helping the people.
ReplyDeleteThis is a good question. But they are taking the picture so that they can raise awareness and that is a great way of helping out.
DeleteI think there may be kids in my community that has to live in similar situations. I think the kids that may be experiencing this do not have to live in as bad of situations though. I think that they may experience not having enough clothes. This causes them to have to wear the same thing to school everyday. They may also have to live in a house where there parents maybe are hoarding.
ReplyDeleteEven though these children live in these harsh environments they make the best of it. In some of these pictures I saw that the children had made swings. They were also laughing in most of the pictures. I asked myself how could they be happy? They are happy because they think this is how everybody lives and they have lived like this their entire life. This is brutal conditions that these children have to live in. This needs to be changed.
I agree. I was confused to as to why the children could look so happy and be so clueless of what they are doing? Then I realized they don't have education and therefore they can't be taught what not to play on! They're just thinking about having fun.
DeleteThese kids are trying to make the best out of their situation by swimming, (even though the water is polluted) playing/making things out of the garbage they have to live in and on. They are doing these things without the knowledge on the potential illnesses that this could bring.
ReplyDeleteIt makes me sad to think that frankly, them and their parent are really killing them!! The kids do not know what is sanitary and what isn't. Due to the reason that they also do not have access to an education. It's depressing to think about how many people die every year because of this.
This comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteI agree, they are making the best out of what they have. Their attitude is really inspiring. We are very lucky to have an education and I think more countries need to help out the less fortunate ones so they can receive and education too.
DeleteI agree because these kids don't know what is coming for them. They have no idea that the toxic water could kill them along with glass, sharp plastic and garbage.
DeleteI agree these kids don't know their rights and they should. The attitude they have is incredible considering that they swim and play in fumes and pollution.
DeleteI agree kids should not be going threw swimming threw dirty water and playing in trash.
DeleteI completely agree with you Nicole. Many people are dying and it's actually really depressing. They have no idea what doing and living in trash could do. Good Job!
DeleteWith in the pictures many rights were broken including the right to fresh water and food because all of those kids have to drink from toxic waters and scavenged for food in unsanitary dumpsters. Another right violated was the right to education. Many of theses kids probably don’t even know what education is. They are forced to work to help their family survive and get food so either they don’t have time to get an education. Or there isn’t a place to get an education in their community and or they don’t have enough money to go to school.
ReplyDeleteI do think that there are people in our country who have to live close to what those children are living like. Many people in our country didn’t get a good education so they weren’t able to get a good job which means they don’t get much money. Due to that they sometimes will have to scavenge for food and may not running water in their house so they might have to buy water or drink from a river or other body of water. To add to that fact many of the bodies of water in the U.S are becoming poluted so then these poor people may have to drink it. This is why I think that learning about children’s rights is a great idea.
I agree with this strongly because if the kids are able to make fun and happiness out of garbage and unsanitary places it truly does mean that they don't know its like that. They don't know that the bacteria can kill them.
DeleteI agree it is not right for anyone to live in this environment.
DeleteSome of the rights that are being violated are: having nutrition, a healthy environment, and access to medicine and medical services. It is just scary and sad what is happening to children. Having nutrition is being healthy and not having worms or other diseases. Having a healthy environment is somewhere to live that does not have toxic waste and feces. Having medicine and medical services means having something to make you better when you have a disease or you are dying.
ReplyDeleteThose are only some of the rights that are being violated. All children need that, but only a few children have those rights. Playing in trash might sound fun, but not if you know what it can do to a person. There are probably children in this country that lack all of those rights. Those children may not live in a dump, but they might be sitting out in the city, getting food and clothes from garbage, just like those children in India - Abbie Tallman
How do you think we could help people like this. No child even adults deserve to live like this. I am glad we have learned about this so I know what is going on in other countries and I know what my rights are.
DeleteAs a child that was fortunate enough to be born into a society with a clean water supply, I wouldn't be able to survive in these circumstances like some of these these children are. They don't have the most recent technology, but they keep a smile on their face. We manage to complain about going to school everyday, while they don't even receive an education. We are all guilty of taking things for granted.
ReplyDeleteTo help these children gain their rights, other countries with the right resources need to help out. These children need an education so they can grow up to get a job and get away from the life they are living now. It could be an on-growing process so we can decrease the amount of people basically living in waste. We could also bring them fresh foods to prevent them from getting diseases.
I agree. It is totally heartbreaking to learn about this retched problem and more and more people should be aware of it.
DeleteI agree with you it not right for anyone to live in this environment
DeleteWe really take for granted that we have food and a home but most of these people in less fortunate countries don't have the basic things that we have.
DeleteI agree with your statement. It's really sad learning about how kids have to go through not having clean water.
DeleteQuestion 1
ReplyDeleteMany children's rights were not met in this article. One is the right to educate. Many of these children do not go to school or might not even know what education means in their community. Instead, these children have to be forced to work to get food for their families and help survive in this harsh environment when they could be going to school and being educated.
Another right that was violated was the right to fresh water and food. Children in this environment have to drink polluted water and try to find food in unsanitary dumpsters then drinking fresh water and good food. This is why I think learning about children's rights is important for our own sake and for those children who may not even know their rights.
I completely agree with you because they probably don't even know what the word "Rights" means which is quite... horrible.
DeleteIt is sad that they have no education
DeleteWe should have people donate food like missionaries. How do you think we could help people like this? Maybe we should have an organization to help?
DeleteI definitely agree with you because every child should have the right to go to school.
DeleteYou can clearly see the rights that are violated in the photos and the article. One is the right to clean water and food. It is disgusting to see that the water they have to drink is polluted and unsanitary. You can't even see the water that flows beneath the floating trash and waste.
ReplyDeleteAnother right that is broken is the right to education. Kids are forced to work and provide food for their family but what can they get that will feed their families that is not infected or has a disease in it? We are taught good hygiene which includes washing our hands, taking baths or showers, wearing shoes so that our feet don't get dirty and being toilet trained at an early age but the kids in bad environments like those in the photos and in the article don't know and don't have the same opportunities as we do. Sanitation is very small there whereas in the U.S it's very common. It's very unfortunate and heartbreaking for the people to have to suffer through diseases because their environment is putrid and unsafe. It's important that people learn more about this major problem so that kids, families and people can get help and can get proper medicine. We all take things for granted when we don't actually realize how lucky we are compared to the kids of poor, foreign countries.
There are some really great comments/discussions going on in this post! I have read many comments that have talked about how we all take these basic rights for granted, this is true and we could all work on being a bit more appreciative of what we have but I also would like you to think about what ways you can help other children receive or defend their rights to have access to more resources to ensure a healthy, safe and happy life? I really appreciate you all taking this seriously and I hope you continue to think about the importance of these children's rights for the individual child as well as for the world.

ReplyDeleteThe right that was not showed in the article was the right to the best health care possible. A lot of children in the pictures show them in waste land/garbage dumps and in polluted water. All kids deserve the right to the best healthcare possible.
ReplyDeleteI agree, they need to have their towns and stuff cleared out so they can have better health. Their rights are really being ignoring.
DeleteI agree, they need to have their towns and stuff cleared out so they can have better health. Their rights are really being ignoring.
DeleteHow do you think we should help children even adults like this? Should we spread the word?
ReplyDeleteI think that kids are suffering from the same thing in our area. I think this because some kids do not have enough money to bye food or clean water. I don't think kids are suffering from having poop in their water but they do suffer from toxic water, dehydration and hunger all around the world. I think this is happening either because they don't live in a safe environment or they do not have enough money.
ReplyDeleteSome rights are not being shown, for instance, they don't have a right to use the bathroom. They have to urine or feces in the middle of nowhere. That is one of the reasons that people are dying from toxic water, because their water is full of feces, urine and garbage. This water is also the water that they bath in.
I agree
DeleteI agree, I think that there are definitely kids with these issues.
DeleteThe children are trying to over come this bad situation by having fun. If you look some of the pictures show the children playing and smiling. They are having a good day in those pictures. It shows you how that we on are bad day can not add up to what they are facing.
ReplyDeleteThere are many ways that there rights are not being met in these pictures.
These children are showing resilience in these photo's by playing with what they were given. As you can see, in a few of these pictures, two little girls are swinging on cloth slings and fabric, but they're smiling like they're at Disneyland meeting Mickey Mouse. In other photos, children jump, swim and flip, but they are all smiling and having a great time. It's hard to imagine swimming in a polluted river and being happy about it, but faced with the circumstances that they face, it's a joy. It's amazing but heartbreaking to see kids having as much fun as they are, because they're literally playing in junkyards and living in dumps.
ReplyDeleteFun is one of the things a child can generate all on their own. Give them a rock and a piece of fabric and soon enough, they'll have made the rock a superhero. These kids have been given some different objects, but they are still having fun because that's what kids do. I'm proud of these children because they're not sobbing and crying for themselves, but making the best out of a bad situation. I think it's kind of fun to see how they generate fun, but it's fun nonetheless.
I totally agree, because even though they have such terrible living standards, they make the best of it a stay positive. Then there are people who complain because they get grounded from a video game console, and say they have nothing to do. I think that it is spectacular, how these children are grateful for what little they have and some children can't appreciate the privileges they get.
DeleteI second that. I think we complain too much about the little things that we don't have or get.

ReplyDeleteA few years ago, I was fortunate enough to be able to travel to the island of Puerto Rico, a country in the Carribean. However, this trip wasn't as I thought it would be. There were neighborhoods falling apart and starving animals wandering around the city and begging people for food. The people there were swimming in poverty but they were still extremely hard workers when it came to helping us around an unfamiliar place. I wish we could have helped them back (which we should have by providing them with food) but I was relieved to see they were able to sustain a positive attitude. However, happiness doesn't feed the family. Hard workers and determined citizens should be provided with the essential needs of a human life simply because they're trying.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a great experience, I think it's great that you noticed them.
DeleteThat sounds like a good vacation and that is cool that you noticed that
DeleteWhat you explained is happening around the whole world. I believe that we should all try to help these people.
DeleteYeah people at my church had the same experiences but they went down to Africa. These people had to walk a long time just to get water but the water wasn't clean.
DeleteThat is a good experience to have. You actually saw it for yourself so you have personal experience that can help you with this children rights.
DeleteI agree with you, Maggie. Happiness doesn`t feed family. But they should get more out of their situation, because they are being positive - Abbie Tallman
DeleteThe children in these photos are not being given the protection and supplies they need. They are suffering from lack of food and a home. We have social services and homeless shelters to provide for those in need, but many children still don't have everything like food every day or a protection from abuse. In America it's very easy to get the help you need, but in 3rd world countries you have to go through a number of steps to get money to them or go out there yourself and help. These children aren't used to a lot, so they use what they have to meet their needs and are content with all they have.
ReplyDeleteI think, yes this a bad thing for children to be living in garbage and trash, but these people are trying to make the best of it by building things out of the trash they are living in. I mean we should still try to help them with their situation but, they look like they're mostly having fun or trying to make their lives seem better by attempting to solve their problem-o.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. When you have to live in trash it violates a lot of your rights.
DeleteI agree with you, Nathan. They are making the best of their situation. They are staying optimistic, even though they are getting terrible diseases - Abbie Tallman
DeleteIn India, and not just India, children seem that they are being neglected all day. If you really think about the meanings behind the pictures, its really sad. The children deserve the rights they can receive!
ReplyDeleteThese children in the pictures are suffering because they don't have their rights as a child. What's even worse is that the countries have ratified the convention and don't keep the promise they made when they signed it. They don't understand what they are doing to the kids because they only care about themselves. If they cared about other people than the children wouldn't be living in waste and searching for food.
ReplyDeleteI saw all of the pictures and they were all depressing. Children shouldn't have to be living in these environments, in fact, no one should. It's sad that these children don't know that. All of the people living without the clean water and the proper housing, aren't aware of their rights. They need to know about these.
ReplyDeleteI agree those were pretty depressing because who wants to know about all these children when we cant help them when we are barely learning what our rights are.
DeleteYes, Alexus, they are depressing and, yes, children around the world should be allowed their rights and to be informed about what they are.
DeleteAlyvia, I think that there are a number of ways that we can help disadvantaged children throughout the world.
The pictures are bogus. Nobody should live like that. The conditions are terrible. I personally am not a tough kid, so the fact that they are surviving is amazing. I mean kids that are younger than us, in those conditions is, inhumane. Totally ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteI agree those were things that no one should live in. Also like you said it is inhumane
DeleteI agree with you on that. Nobody should live like that it is just ridiculous.
DeleteI agree, these conditions aren't livable, yet they have to try and survive in them.
DeleteOther kids around the world and even adults could help kids like them. They could send toys, food, even just money to build shelters. I feel bad for kids like that because they have so little. While lots of people have like Iphones, computers, Xbox, PlayStation, and places to live most of those kids are just having fun in dirty water, piles of trash, etc. while we are complaining about not having enough of something. Most of those kids don't even get to go to school to grow up and get a good job. Its sad to see kids getting all dirty then going and getting even more dirty by taking a bath in polluted water, probably with parasites in there.
ReplyDeleteThe reason that the United States hasn't signed the UNCRC is because it allows kids not to do chores and put it off on their parents. Things such as cooking would have to be done by parents just because there is a stove involved. This would keep the parents away from work therefore affecting parents income, businesses, and the USA economy.
ReplyDeleteSome of the children's rights that are not met in these photos are the right shelters and food. The children looks happy because they probably don't know about their rights and think that how they're living now is okay. I think that is one of the reasons why it's important for us to learn about our rights.
ReplyDeleteI think that some children in Iowa are suffering the same as the children in these images. I do not mean that they are swimming in garbage or playing in pollution, I simply mean that they are both fighting for their next meal or not sure where they are going to sleep tonight.
ReplyDeleteI agree, even as much money as the United States has there is a ridiculous amount of homeless people that could be helped especially children.
DeleteI saw the pictures of all the kids and I thought they were all really sad. It is not right for children to live this way. No one should have to not be able to have clean water or food. These children don't know their rights as a child. They need to know.
ReplyDeleteDylan KipperFebruary 18, 2015 at 1:01 PM
ReplyDeleteDo I think there are people in the U.S having the same problems? Yes i do because there are a lot of homeless people in the U.S. I have never seen one for myself living how these kids are living but I do very well think that there are people going threw the same thing.
What childrens rights do I think are not being met? I think the right that children should have a house in a good neighborhood to live in. Also these children should go to school and get an education.
I think that their may be children in our country who have to live like this. Let alone our state. Some who may be kidnapped, run away from home, or even just don't have a family they're all alone. When a child is taken and maybe simply left maybe in the forest, they don't have food, water, or shelter. Its like when in Africa they don't have they everyday necessities that we have here in America.
ReplyDeleteLots of people can help others protect their rights. If others know their rights they can protect themselves and others. If everyone knew their rights we wouldn't have the problem of people being kidnapped. Or maybe children who feel like they aren't being taken seriously. If the US signed the document and made the rights officially our than we would be able to protect ourselves a lot better.
-What ways can you help other children receive or defend their rights to have access to more resources to ensure a healthy, safe and happy life?
ReplyDeleteTo have children in these conditions live as happy life you can raise awareness. This can start a donation/fundraiser to get these kids the money they need. Or just start clubs and or groups to think of ways to help them. The conditions these are living in are terrible and you can remind people they can help.
I agree, we should definitely raise awareness for these children.
DeleteThe children in the article show resilience by trying to benefit from what they have. Even though they do not have much, they still can enjoy themselves. Even the smallest moment of happiness is something to look forward to. Especially in the state these kids are in, it probably means a lot to them.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely with you. They don't exactly know that there are better ways for them to live or any of their rights. All they do know is that this is what they have and always will have. It's a way of life.
DeleteI think the children in this country show resilience by still finding fun while being in this absolutely terrible situation. They use the countrys own trash for fun which to be entirely honest, is absolutely terrible. If these kids can find fun in landfills and trash, I could only imagine what kind of fun they could find in a playground. I hope that these kids could eventually have a clean country and sources of fun that won't be potentially deadly.
ReplyDeleteI think that all countries have a people that have to experience the lack of a clean and safe home but if you take the United States for example, we don't have human waste and trash all over the place - and kids especially don't have to play in or around it.
The children in these photos are overcoming their bad situations by staying positive even though they are having many problems in their life. These kids are having fun even though we here in america may think that this would be an unsafe environment to live in. This makes me realize that we live in a great place and should be grateful for what we have here because children in different parts of the world sometimes barely get food to eat each day. When we were talking in class about the photos, some people said they wish they could help the kids. I feel really bad that kids have to actually live in that environment. It is unsafe and dangerous to live there in garbage basically.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement.
DeleteThe UNCRC rights are violated all the time for example the right that your are subjected to privacy any one can just take a picture of someone and put it on the internet that right is overlooked all the time probably one of the most overlooked.
ReplyDeleteSurvival rights are not met. They are showing resilience by having fun on the garbage piles and swimming in the ponds while having fun. They are not letting the conditions of there rights let them not have fun. They are not going to have a bad life because of their rights.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely. Even though their circumstances are dire, they are trying to have fun despite that.
DeleteI totally understand what you are saying and I agree completely. Even though all of the trash is there they are still having fun.
DeleteThey are trying to overcome bad feeling by jumping happily on trash piles that they eat sleep and live on. This is a great accomplishment for those kids although they need a better home. This may seem like a terrible thing that you think that they are enjoying jumping on their crappy home. This is a great thing for them because they have learned to overcome their nonfun life. I can do that with my parents saying that I can't go to a party but they are doing this with their whole life.
ReplyDeleteThe bad side is the fact they are ignoring the fact that they and many others they live with are all in very deep poverty. This is also very bad so that they don't realize that what they are doing is not healthy for them and they could die any second from starvation or any other sickness related to this. So this is a good and bad thing at the same time.
Many children around the world aren't getting all of their rights for example education they really need to work on implying these rights more
ReplyDeleteI believe that children in the U.S. and the children in these countries do not have the same problems. Kids in the U.S. are complaining how they didn't get the latest IPhone. Kids in those third world country are getting entertainment through dirty water. That is a right violation for all those children. So, it makes me so angry when kids in the U.S. cry about how they didn't get what they want. Well, at least you have clean water and shelter.
ReplyDeleteYes, kids in the U.S. should realize how lucky they are, compared to those in other countries.
DeleteI think that these children are trying to overcome their circumstances by trying to have fun even if they don't have proper toys or playgrounds. Whatever they don't have, they tried to make up for it. For example, many of these children don't have swings at a playground so they created their own version of them. They might not have it all, but they are sure trying to make the best of it.
ReplyDeleteThe kids in the photos look as if they are trying to turn the bad into the good by make the trash into things that they use and or play with. The sight of the children playing in filth may upset many people. I cant believe that the parents of the children are letting them do this. The disgusting water that is filled with trash can harm the kids that swim and play in it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jaeda. The kids are trying to have fun with what they have, instead of moping about what they don't have.
